DESCRIPTION:Our featured speaker is Bert Ely\, CASE WESTERN 1964. \nBrother Ely is a financial institutions and monetary policy consultant based in Alexandria\, Virginia. He has consulted on deposit insurance and banking issues since 1981. Bert continuously monitors conditions in the banking industry as well as economic and monetary policy issues. \nIn recent years\, Bert has focused attention on the resolution of problems in the U.S. financial system\, the economic recovery from the Great Recession\, and the implementation of Dodd-Frank. He also consults to the ABA on Farm Credit System issues\, including writing monthly Bert Ely’s Farm Credit Watch. \nBert first established his consulting practice in 1972. He received his MBA from the Harvard Business School in 1968 and his Bachelor’s degree in economics in 1964 from Case Western Reserve University.

DESCRIPTION:Our featured speaker will be Reginald “Reg” Hyde\, ALABAMA 1980. \nBrother Hyde is currently engaged in technology and investment financing through Oak Mountain Ventures and Consulting\, and he actively participates on Boards of Directors and Advisory Boards. With a remarkable 30-year career at the CIA\, he held various roles\, including overseas assignments as a CIA operations officer and Station Chief. Notably\, he served as the Executive Assistant to the Director of Central Intelligence and his Deputy and played a key role in establishing a significant technology center. Additionally\, Mr. Hyde was instrumental in the creation of In-Q-Tel\, the Intelligence Community’s Strategic Venture element\, in 2000. During his tenure at In-Q-Tel\, he focused on areas such as Venture Capital\, Cybersecurity\, Big Data\, Predictive Analytics\, and M&A related to these technologies. \nMr. Hyde concluded his government career as the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security at the Pentagon\, where he held responsibility for overseeing intelligence policy and operations for the military. Recognized for his accomplishments\, he attained the civilian-equivalent rank of a military three-star officer in 2005. Following his retirement from government service in 2013\, he founded and served as the Executive Director of the University of Alabama Cyber Institute for over five years before returning to Washington\, DC\, to fully engage in private business endeavors. He holds degrees in both BS and JD from the University of Alabama\, as well as a Master’s Degree from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.

DESCRIPTION:Our featured speaker for the July luncheon is Pulitzer-winning journalist & Wall Street Journal Senior Reporter James Grimaldi\, MISSOURI-COLUMBIA 1984. \nPer the Wall Street Journal: \nJames V. Grimaldi s a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist assigned to The Wall Street Journal’s investigations desk and based in Washington\, D.C.\, where he has written about money\, politics\, lobbying and campaigns. He also has written about financial disclosures of judges and politicians\, global money laundering\, government accountability and public and corporate corruption. \nA winner of many journalism awards\, James has lectured at George Washington University\, the University of Maryland-College Park\, American University\, Georgetown University and Boston College Law School. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri Journalism School and Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and is a member of the steering committee of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. \nJames previously was a Knight-Bagehot fellow at Columbia University and a Ferris Professor of Journalism at Princeton University. He is a past president of Investigative Reporters and Editors and a board member for the Fund for Investigative Journalism\, where he mentors grantees. James also mentors veterans entering the civilian workforce through American Corporate Partners\, a charity supported by News Corp\, and runs a program to support a network of local food pantries in the District of Columbia.

SUMMARY:May Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:Our featured speaker at the May luncheon is Significant Sig Ross Swope\, MARYLAND 1972. \nBrother Swope grew up in the world of law enforcement. The son of a cop\, he joined the Washington\, DC\, police force soon after he graduated from the University of Maryland in 1972. \nOver the next 43 years\, he rose through the ranks\, ultimately becoming deputy chief of the DC Metropolitan Police Department and then the chief of police of the US Supreme Court. \nHis many responsibilities included planning\, administration\, management\, investigations\, budgeting\, and human relations\, with an emphasis on leadership. A highly effective law enforcement manager and forward thinker\, he pursued continuing education and applied it to every department he served. \nBrother Swope has been published locally\, nationally\, and internationally on such topics as community policing\, problem-oriented policing\, leadership issues\, and effective policing strategies.  Generally recognized as the creator and author of the seminal work on police ethics\, he has been widely cited in major publications on that subject. \nHe recently completed his book Ethics-Based Policing: Solving the Use of Excessive Force. In it\, he details his proven approach to improving law enforcement and restoring an environment of trust\, confidence\, and cooperation between citizens and police officers. \nAlso an avid outdoorsman and craftsman\, Ross has had his writing and photography featured in adventure magazines. He currently lives in Gambrills\, Maryland. \nIn addition to his numerous awards and commendations\, Ross holds three master’s degrees—applied behavioral science; justice\, law\, and society; and applied criminology.
